Late 19th century hand made and decoratively painted game board, circa 1890s to 1910, a checker or chess board with squares individually hand painted with miniature watercolor portraits of different stylish young women… Late Victorian precursors to the Gibson Girls… enclosed within a Chinoiserie chain link border. The thick board is held in a mitered frame, the painted surface protected under a sheet of glass, and with the original rough backboard bearing a handwritten Chicago inscription with partial signature.
This unique hand made game board combines a country folk art approach with a touch of urban high style in the fashionable portraits (check out those hats!). The piece clearly shows its age and use, but remains in strong color and very good, firm condition.
