The cherub upholstery fabric of this antique corner chair will bring a smile to your face, but the piece deserves a deeper look. It has a secret.: The chair has a “second skin,” in a tweed upholstery that someone was reluctant to remove. The cherub upholstery on the armrest of the chair is actually a shawl or drape for the for the chair.
It is Victorian, carved and turned walnut on a part-upholstered corner armchair
that is English or American from the late 19th Century according to our appraiser.
The seat is triangular with a rounded front rail, that is backed by two low arms with raised upholstery. The curved seat rail has a long fringe trim, all raised on four cylindrical bead turned legs on casters. The detachable fabric drape or shawl is priceless. Appraisers beleive this could have possibly been half of a two-piece tete-a-tete chair at some point.
It measures 29 inches tall, 22 inches wide, and 22 inches deep. The chair is sturdy and the wheels are in good condition for a piece from the late 1800s. The finish to the walnut has scuffs and marks. But it is still quite charming and a nice place to sit or curl up in comfort, maybe with a book in the corner of a room to watch others.
