Natural Hashira Fleurs Sauvages Table Lamp from Villard

A lamp foot ”end grain” (trunk sawed in length) of crude birch, set in a square of patinated wax steel.
The birch, common tree in our woods, is the first strain which our culture down cherry trees. Its berries, ”cherries” are the delight of birds that spread the seeds. This is where it derives its Latin name ”Prunus avium”, ”bird cherry”.

Wood, especially the end grain, is a material that is constantly working. Whatever the season, temperature conditions and humidity, cracks and cracks can appear in the structure of our square. We particularly like this life that continues and this element of uncertainty that can change appearances: they are part of our research and our aesthetic.
The lampshade is made of a fabric nani IRO, created by the Japanese artist Naomi Ito. Its sophisticated textile creations, delicate and refined, reflect his work as a watercolorist. His color palette echoes that of nature, its nuances remain ”tone on tone” and his lines fleeing violence.
In the words of Naomi Ito: ”I paint as if I was picking a flower with the surrounding air. ”
The motive of the square, recurring at L’Atelier Villard, refers to the central pillar thick wood around which were built the old Japanese houses: the bashira Daikoku 大 黒 柱. This axis supported the weight of the building and allowed him to withstand earthquakes and typhoons.
The word has several origins, Daikokuten: one of the seven figures of happiness in Shinto beliefs is one of the household deities. Hashira (pillar): word count for trees and wood but also to the gods in the Shinto animism.
In Japan where it was believed that the gods inhabited the trees and forests, it is no wonder that this wooden central pillar was revered in the house. Hashira: the word still evokes a sense of stability, and remains deeply rooted in the Japanese mind.
