Contemporary Design
Bergontwerp is a Dutch studio led by Gerard Bovenberg. It makes handmade ceramic lamps and chandeliers in the extraordinary translucent and durable ‘bone china or ‘ivory porcelain. This porcelain ceiling light gives you warm, atmospheric, and directional light. The recessed hole in the bottom provides a bright focused and shadowless light, and also prevents from looking straight into the light source. The model is both an atmospheric eye-catcher and a practical mood lighting. It works just as well singularly as in groups, and is available in different sizes and with an open and closed version.
The lamps are produced manually in the artists own studio and cast in bone china. This material is often associated with classic, refined English tableware, but the sculptural shape makes it appear solid and monumental. The unglazed bone china in these objects – with their irregular shape and ‘skin – has a solid appearance which creates an intriguing tension with the translucent qualities of the porcelain. Each casting has a distinct design that only becomes visible when the form is illuminated from within. The design consists of drips, drops, trapped air bubbles, pinholes and other irregularities in the cast material, which give the lights their lively character. Moreover, the finishing and the firing processes influence the final shape and surface of the lights. Each light is therefore unique.
The light and the rosette is made of bone china and the fixture holds an E14 socket with a LED bulb (included). It weighs around 200 grams and the 180 cm long fabric-cord comes normally in white matte but is also available in plain silver, plain moss green, twisted ivory white, and twisted whiskey brown. Stamped by Maker,
Up to 250V (Europe/UK Standard).
